Haircut Numbers Explained
Haircut numbers refer to the plastic guard that clips onto the clippers. Each number leaves a set length of hair: the higher the number, the longer the hair. On most brands, each step up adds 1/8 inch (about 3 mm) up to a #8, which leaves a full inch. Barbers mix numbers to create fades, tapers and crew cuts.
- Number 1 haircut: 1/8 inch (3 mm), very short with visible scalp.
- Number 2 haircut: 1/4 inch (6 mm), the classic short buzz cut.
- Number 3 haircut: 3/8 inch (10 mm), a soft buzz with little scalp showing.
- Number 4 haircut: 1/2 inch (13 mm), a longer buzz with full coverage.
- Number 5 haircut: 5/8 inch (16 mm), short but full.
- Number 6 haircut: 3/4 inch (19 mm), neat with some movement.
- Number 8 haircut: 1 inch (25 mm), the longest guard in basic sets.
- 10 guard haircut: 1 1/4 inches (32 mm).
- 12 guard haircut: 1 1/2 inches (38 mm).
- 16 guard haircut: what people usually mean by a “16 guard”.
